What happens in the 'Shed'?

One of the regular questions we get asked is “what happens in a shed?” Basically, it’s about people coming together to share practical skills and to fix or make stuff - the sort of jobs that men do in their garage or shed at home. But working in a shed at home can be restrictive and often solitary - Driffield Men In Sheds is just the opposite.

Welcome

Welcome to Driffield Men In Sheds, a registered charity that’s all about friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge, and of course, plenty of tea drinking and having a good laugh.

Our Shed is centrally located in Driffield and a place where people can come together to share practical interests. Our Shed is an ideal get-away to share skills and enjoy making and mending as well as building social connections and friendships.

What actually happens in the Shed is largely down to what the members (or Shedders as they are known) want to do – usually based on their existing skills, hobbies and interests. Driffield Men In Sheds started in 2020 and the activities are still evolving as new members join but at the moment these  include woodworking, metalworking, repairing and restoring, gardening (we’ve two allotments and a small garden space) and electrical engineering. Whatever activities take place though, the basis of our Driffield Shed isn’t so much the activities, it’s the community, the connections and relationships that are built between its members.

The Shed

Our Driffield Shed is located on North Street close to the centre of Driffield making it easy to access for local residents on foot or by bike. Limited parking is also available on-site for those coming by car.

The address is: Driffield Men In Sheds, North Street, Driffield YO25 6AS

News

Open Day

On September 9th 2023, we held our first open day at the Shed.  The sun beat down on what was a hugely successful day, attracting lots of visitors to see first-hand the activities and meet with members.   We hope this will become an annual event to showcase our charity.

Success in the 'Dragons Den'

Afer being shortlisted from nearly 50 local charities, Driffield Men in Sheds were selected to present at a Dragons Den style event. Run by the Two Ridings Community Charity, the event provided an opportunity to talk about our shed in Driffield and how we wanted to attract new members.  The Trustees were delighted to receive great support and walked away with some very generous funding which will be put to good use in the coming months. (Photo shows Trustees Digby Lovell and Mark Blakeston receiving a cheque from Richard Shepherdson the High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire).

Shed Opening

Our shed was officially opened on Monday 18th October 2021 by the Richard Shepherdson (the High Sheriff of the East Riding of Yorkshire) and Cllr. Matt Rogers ( Mayor of Driffield).

Workshop

Woodwork & Metalwork

With lots of interesting projects coming up – we have lots of skilled and enthusiastic members with woodworking and metalworking skills. Our shed is well equipped with a range of quality hand tools and larger workshop tools so that most jobs can be undertaken

Electrical Engineering

We’ve an enthusiastic group of member’s keen on all aspects of electrical and electronic engineering - from repairing tools for resale in our regular yard sales (including Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)) to refurbishing domestic appliances  there’s always opportunity for new members to get involved.

Gardening

There’s a fair bit of land around our shed in Driffield – so always a job to do and plenty of scope for planting. We also have two allotments too which are well established and produce lots of fresh vegetables to share or sell at our weekly yard sale

Vehicles,  Machines and Bicycles

Old tractors, motorbikes, stationary engines, lawn mowers and bikes – in fact anything with an engine and we’re interested. From small to large projects there will be help on-hand to provide advice or get involved with that restoration job. We can also undertake minor repairs on bikes - such as fitting new inner tubes or tyres

Community Projects

Driffield Men In Sheds is located in the heart of the community so it makes sense to get involved with community projects when we can – from making planters to repairing benches, we will take a look at anything that needs our skills.

Technology

We can offer support to learn basic computer skills – whether you’ve a smartphone, tablet or a laptop, we can help you get the best out of it. Whether you’re a total novice or just want a bit of advice using applications like email, Teams, Zoom, Skype, Facetime or Facebook we can usually sort out some help.

Computer Aided CNC

We've invested in a small CNC engraving matching which is able to transfer almost any design from our PC and route it into wood or use the laser to copy it on to a range of materials - ideal for making signs or ibespoke items to sell in our regular yard sales.

Membership

Join us

If you want to know more about Driffield Men in Sheds you can:

There's a standard Membership fee for joining our Shed which entitles you to join in and use all the facilities whenever we're open. Our preference is for the Membership fee to be paid by standing order to reduce admin costs and our Secretary will be able to provide full details and terms of membership upon request.

Tools

Members can bring along with their own hand-tools but we've built-up a good selection of additional hand tools that can be shared and used in the Shed.

Fundraising take places whenever necessary to update or purchase larger or specialist tools for use in the Shed.

Training

Whilst most training will be informal with skills and experience shared between members, from time to time it may be necessary to provide specialist training to ensure we have the necessary skills and safety in-place.  Health & Safety is at the forefront of everything we do because we want to make the Shed a safe place for everyone to enjoy.

Support

As a charity we rely on the support of the local community in Driffield.

Research has shown the negative impact of loneliness and isolation on a person’s health and wellbeing. Surveys from mental health charities are finding that millions of people report feeling lonely on a daily basis and men typically find it more difficult to build social connections than women. It’s obviously not the case for all men, but for some, when retirement comes, it can feel like personal identity and purpose is lost. Driffield Men In Sheds Men’s was set-up to change all of that.

If you’d like to support us in any way (materials, your time or even a donation) please get in touch with one of our trustees.

Crown Decorating Centre - Driffield
Crown Decorating Centre in Driffield generously donated paint and materials to enable the Shed to be refurbished. We'd like to thank Andy (the Driffield branch manager) for his great support, advice and assistance.

Co-operative Funeral Care - Driffield

The team at the Co-operative raised funds and awareness through various activities and presented a generous cheque to Men in Sheds.

Two Ridings Community Charity
Following a 'Dragons Den' style presentation to the Two Ridings Community Charity, we were awarded funding to help us develop our membership through use of local newspaper and radio campaigns.

First Aid Box Training Solutions

FAB Training provided an excellent first aid course at their Driffield offices for trustees and members. The course was specially tailored for Men in Sheds, even covering the use of a defibrillator

Nisa Local - Driffield
The local Nisa store in Driffield contacted us and assisted us in securing funding through 'Making A Difference Locally' (MADLCharity) which helped us support members from across Driffield and the Wolds.

Reds10 - Driffield

Reds10 provides clients with a full turnkey service to design and build amazing accommodation and work spaces. They made a generous donation allowing us to purchase a small CNC Routing machine which we will use for many projects in the future. They continue to be a regular supporter of our charity.
